The Not-So-Common Sandwich

On the Wednesday the 14th July, a group gathered to see who among them were the most aspiring sandwich chefs. Displayed in front of the team was a table full of amazing breads, vegetables, tins of tuna and sauces. Each contestant drew a number and was allowed to choose what type of bread or wraps they wanted. Then the competition was on!

The judges, Anju, Saud, Rumana and Pratima, walked around the room marking each group on their teamwork and cleanliness. They had 20 minutes in which to create a Jamie Oliver-styled delicious gourmet sandwich.

Then once the twenty-minutes were up each team’s spokesperson explained why they had decided to go for the type of sandwich they had made. Most interesting among these was Yujan Wang’s group. Their sandwich represented a mountain which is significant in Buddhist philosophy. The judges tasted each of the 5 teams masterpieces and marked them for taste, originality and presentation. Well done to Yi, Imad and Ahley who were the winning team. They scored very high on teamwork and made a tasty wrap for our judges.

The Chef Demonstration

After the Sandwich Chefs were given their prizes we had Ali give us a real Chef’s demonstration – doing something he does very well – making Porotha. Ali is an expert at making a very thin dough for the Porotha. He does this by flipping it in the air which is a great art in itself and brilliant to watch. We were all transfixed watching him skillfully throwing the dough around. Some of the Porotha had a tomato and onion filling, others had a bit of extra chilli and cheese. All the students thought it was the most deilicious thing they had ever tasted. Many thanks go to Ali for the demonstration he gave us and his generousity in buying all the ingrediants. Everyone loved it and stayed until the Porotha was all finished.
