The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exam is rapidly becoming the most popular official test of English language for immigration, higher education and employment purposes.
The exam consists of four modules:
- Speaking
- Listening
- Reading
- Writing
There are two types of IELTS exam: General Training and Academic.
The Listening and Speaking modules are the same for both exams.
Williams College offers IELTS preparation courses to students who intend to sit for the exam. The College is not a test centre – it is the responsibility of individualstudents to register and book a place with an approved IELTS test centre.

IELTS classes at Williams College are designed and taught to improve your general knowledge of English while guiding you through exam techniques.
Every week you will practise each module of the exam.
Speaking
You will practise answering sample questions with your teacher who will give you feedback and advice.
Group discussions will give you the confidence to speak English on a variety of topics with confidence.
Listening
Your teacher will guide you on how to answer common question types in this module.
You will be instructed in how to listen for key words and other important information.
Reading
You will practise sample papers from both General Training and Academic.
Important techniques such as skim-reading, scanning and reading for detail will be taught.
Writing
You will practise sample papers from both General Training and Academic.
You teacher will instruct you in grammar, vocabulary and formal / informal writing.
Every Friday a mock exam will be held. Your teacher will give you individual feedback in areas you need to improve.
IELTS classes at Williams College are designed for students seeking to achieve a minimum Overall Band 6.0.
Therefore, students should have an English level of Upper Intermediate (CEFR B2).
Students without this level of English are encouraged to apply for General English classes until their English abilities reach the required level.
Minimum age: 18 years old
Fees are for classes only. You will also need to purchase a coursebook.
Students will need to register and pay for the IELTS exam at an approved IELTS test centre.
